Jenay Varga named to CCAA All-Canadian Team
Lakeland standout Jenay Varga has been named to the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association All-Canadian Team for the second straight year.
The third year left-side from Muenster, SK was the most dominant player in the ACAC through the duration of the regular season, with her steady play on offence and defence anchoring the Rustlers league best 18-1 record. During this regular season, Varga and her teammates lost just three sets total in that lone defeat to Augustana, sweeping every other contest.
She topped her performance from a year ago, leading the league in kills per set (4.09), service aces per set (.8) and points per set (5), as well as the accumulative total for each of those three stats. Varga was also third in hitting percentage and in the top 25 for digs per set. A weekend highlight was the team's sweep of the Keyano Huskies, where the third year had 33 kills in just six sets. This lead to her being named ACAC North Division Player of the Year for the second straight season and to the North Division All-Conference Team for the third time and added to her career regular season totals of 722 kills, 137 aces and 545 digs.
In the ACAC Championship, Varga continued to produce at a high level, posting 29 kills, 3 aces and 24 digs in the team's three straight-set victories over Briercrest, Red Deer and Augustana. In the opening set of the Gold Medal Match, she paced her squad with several kills, leading to a 25-17, 25-13, 25-16 victory. This earned her a spot on the Tournament All-Star Team.
Earlier this year, Head Coach Austin Dyer talked about Varga's soft-spoken leadership, calling her the humblest elite athlete he's ever met.
"Jenay is a true teammate, always putting her teammates first," Dyer said. "Her work ethic is hard to match, which has allowed her to succeed in all areas of our program. I'm extremely proud of the person and athlete that Jenay has become."
Varga and the rest of the Rustlers will compete at the National Championship this weekend in Nanaimo, BC. She is currently working towards a Bachelor of General Studies degree.
