Rustlers Weekend Recap - October 30, 2022
Only one of the Rustlers teams found the win column over the weekend.
Lakeland's women's volleyball team hosted the Keyano Huskies on Friday, winning 25-16, 25-17, 25-16. Wing spikers Lana Matthews, Jenay Varga and Avery Bates combined for 35 kills, with Matthews winning Player of the Game off of her 13.
On Saturday, the Rustlers traded aggressive serving with the Huskies in the first two sets, with the visitors proving the first team to come at the nationally ranked squad with some confidence. While Keyano held leads in both, Lakeland's consistency kept them on top, 25-21 and 25-20. In the third, the Rustlers were in full control, winning 25-16.
Varga lead all scorers with 18 points, while Kaylie Lueck was named Player of the Game for her steady play at the net, which included 5 kills and no errors.
The men had a tougher time against a powerhouse Huskies squad. Both nights, the Rustlers dropped the opening set before responding in the second. Saturday, Lakeland held a 23-22 lead in the 3rd set, but were unable to hold onto it, losing their second straight four-set match. Tylie Montgrand and Aiden Maier earned POG honours.
Next for the two squads is a road trip to Calgary and Olds this weekend.
The basketball squads were both swept by the Huskies in Fort McMurray. The women lost 66-50 and 57-55, while the men lost 103-69 and 78-56. This Friday, the two ball teams will host the SAIT Trojans, starting at 1:00 PM.
