Volleyball Teams Continue Winning Ways
The Rustler Volleyball teams competed at home this past weekend hosting the Grande Prairie Wolves to see if they could continue the momentum they built from last few weekends.
The women took to the court on Friday night and were hoping to get off to a quick start. The Wolves battled hard to start the match but the Rustlers were able to put together a few large runs to take the match 3 sets to 0 by scores of 25 – 17, 25 – 16, and 25 – 13. Jenay Varga had a great performance for the Rustlers leading the team offensively with 12 kills and 7 serve aces. Avery Bates had a solid performance at the net contributing 5 stuff blocks.
The Player of the game for the Rustlers was Nicole Sharpe.
Saturday afternoon the Rustlers carried forward their winning ways, once again defeating Grande Prairie 3 sets to 0 by scores of 25 -12, 25-14, and 25 – 7. Jenay Varga and MacKenzie Yole led the Rustlers with 13 and 7 kills respectively. Orianna Hyndman was named Player of the Game for the Rustlers. Saturday was also a special day for 3 Rustler Women's Volleyball players as it was Senior Night.
After the match Coach, Dyer acknowledged the efforts and contributions over the years of Orianna Hyndman, Nicole Sharpe, and Brooklyn Boehm. "All 3 student-athletes epitomized what it meant to do things the Rustler way", Coach Dyer commented.
With the 2 wins the Rustlers have secured first place in the North Division and will now be guaranteed to host a north semi-final game.
The Rustler men we hoping to string together some wins to secure a spot in the top half of the ACAC north division. Friday the visiting Wolves played some scrappy defense and worked extremely hard which resulted in a first set victory 25 – 20. The Rustlers regrouped and came back with 3 set wins 25 – 17, 25 – 16, and 25 – 23 to take the match 3 sets to 1.
Player of the Game Tylie Montgrand led the Rustlers with 12 kills and outside hitters Mason Short and Cameron Jones contributed 11 kills each to lead the Rustlers to the victory.
Saturday the men were looking to make it 5 wins in a row when they hosted the Wolves on home court. The Wolves once again came out playing some solid defense and the first set was a battle but the Rustlers prevailed taking the first game 28 – 26. The victory took the bite out of the Wolves and the Rustlers won the next two sets 25 – 20 and 25 – 22.
Player of the Game Brady Cole led the Rustlers with 6 kills and 2 stuff blocks. Cameron Jones, Jarret Nelson, and Mason Short also added 6 kills to secure the Rustler's 5th victory in a row. The Rustler men also celebrated the careers of 3 Rustlers Saturday afternoon. Brady Cole, Matt Peck, and Jean Carlo Funez Raudales. Coach Dyer commented, "These athletes have contributed to the positive change in the program culture that will have an impact for years."
Next up for the Rustlers will be the final two regular-season competitions against the King's Eagles on Thursday and Concordia Thunder on Friday.
