Lakeland rustles up their first CCAA National Championship
The Lakeland Rustlers are CCAA gold medalists for the first time in school history after a four set victory over the Camosun Chargers on Saturday night (March 11); 25-20, 25-20, 17-25 and 26-24.
The Rustlers used tremendous defence and a strong middle attack to secure the exciting win. Defensively they recorded nine blocks led by the Alyssa Grondin with 4 and Chelsea Steinley with 3.
Offensively Ahnika Kuse and Shelby Becker led the charge with 11 kills each. Avery Maginel was named the player of the match with 5 kills, 6 digs and a block.
The Chargers found new life after the third set victory and had opportunities to push to a fifth and final set, but the Rustlers defence stood tall. Katie Fetting led the offensive attack with a match high 16 kills and their player of the match, Michelle Zygmunt, tallied 15 kills, three aces and 14 digs.
