Women’s Soccer Finishes the Season Strong
The Rustlers Women's Soccer team finished the season on a strong note this past weekend as they entered the playoffs for the first time in program history.
The women started their playoff run by hosting a quarterfinal game against the Grande Prairie Wolves on Friday. Sloane Cannan put the Rustlers up 1–0 at the 20-minute mark with the first goal of the game. The Rustlers wore the Wolves down in the second half eventually going up 2-0 on a goal by Haylee Rogers at the 74-minute mark. Ashley Parker sealed the victory for the Rustlers with a goal before the end of the game giving the Rustlers a 3–0 victory and moved them into a showdown with the number one team in the north, the NAIT Ooks on Sunday.
In their one regular season competition against the Ooks earlier in the season the Rustlers battled to earn a tie. Against the Ooks on Sunday the Rustlers found themselves behind early with the Ooks scoring two quick goals to open the game. The Rustlers settled down and played a strong defensive game and closed the gap to one on a goal from Ashley Parker near the end of the second half. With the Rustlers pushing to tie the Ooks scored their third goal of the game to seal the win.
Although the Rustlers exited the playoffs after the north semi-finals they can be proud of their season. A 3–2-1 regular season, one week in the CCAA top 15 rankings, a trip to the ACAC playoffs all with a team made up of all first-year players except for 2 second-year players. Definitely a foundation that can be built on for future seasons and with what the women showed this year their future is bright.
