The Lakeland Rustlers traveled to Medicine Hat and Lethbridge over the weekend for their final two games of the ACAC Soccer regular season.
Saturday, the Rustlers were in Medicine Hat to take on the Rattlers. The Rustlers would be the first to score, with fifth year winger Ashley Miller finding the back of the net in the 28th minute to give the Rustlers the 1-0 lead. The Rustlers had a chance to extend their lead on a penalty kick at the start of the second half, but the Rattlers goalkeeper made a big save, to keep the Rustlers lead at one. The physicality continued to increase, with both teams looking to finish the game strong.
The Rustlers secured the win on another goal by Miller in the 90th minute, giving them the 2-0 win. Miller was named Player of the Game for the Rustlers.
Sunday, the Rustlers took on the Lethbridge Kodiaks in their final game of the season. Both teams struggled to get momentum and take control of the game in the first half, until the Kodiaks scored in the 44th minute, giving them the 1-0 halftime lead. Rustlers first year goalkeeper Kiera Sunderland made some big saves early in the second half, as the Kodiaks looked to extend their lead. The Kodiaks had a chance to take the 2-0 lead later in half, but the goal was called back due to offside. The Rustlers had opportunities but were never able to score, losing the game 1-0.
Player of the Game for the Rustlers was third year midfielder Olivia Lay.
The Rustlers finished the season in 6th place in the ACAC South Division with a 2-9-1 record, missing the playoffs.
The team showed great improvement from the beginning to end of the season, which they look to build off of heading into futsal season.
