The Lakeland Rustlers Women's Soccer team played their final two home games of the regular season over the weekend, taking on the Olds College Broncos and the SAIT Trojans.
The Lakeland Rustlers faced the Olds College Broncos on a cold, windy Saturday afternoon in Lloydminster. The Rustlers took control of the ball early on and looked to take control of the game. Rustlers 3rd-year center Nikki Boutin opened the scoring in the 18th minute, giving them the early lead. Both teams had chances to score in the remainder of the half, but it wasn't until the 45th minute when 5th-year winger Ashley Miller would find the back of the net to give the Rustlers the 2-0 lead.
The wind continued to blow in the second half, and the teams switching directions gave the Broncos the advantage of having the wind as they controlled the ball for much of the second half. The Rustlers lead cut to one on a Broncos goal in the 56th minute. Both teams had scoring opportunities as the game went on, but neither was able to score, giving Lakeland the 2-1 win, and their first victory of the season.
Rustlers first year goalkeeper, Kiera Sunderland, was named Player of the Game for the Rustlers.
In their final home game of the regular season, the Rustlers faced the SAIT Trojans. The Trojans controlled the ball for most of the first half, with the Rustlers struggling to clear the ball from their defensive end. The Rustlers played well defensively, and Sunderland made several big saves, holding the Trojans scoreless in the half, despite having plenty of good scoring opportunities. At the half, the teams were tied at zero.
In the second half, the Trojans once again remained in control of the ball for much of play. The Rustlers did a better job of clearing the ball from their defensive end and put themselves in a better scoring position. The Rustlers held the Trojans scoreless on their first 30 shot attempts, before finding the back of the net in the 84th minute. The Trojans added another goal minutes later, giving them the 2-0 win.
Player of the Game for the Rustlers was #10, Gabrielle Lapointe.
The Rustlers are on the road for their final weekend of the ACAC Soccer season, taking on the Medicine Hat Rattlers (2-7-1) and Lethbridge Kodiaks (5-4-1). The Rustlers sit in 7th place in the ACAC South Division with a record of 1-8-1.
