The Lakeland Rustlers Women's Soccer team hit the road on the weekend to take on the Ambrose Lions and Red Deer Queens.
The Rustlers were in Calgary on Saturday to take on the Ambrose Lions. The Rustlers found themselves down early, as the Lions opened up a 1-0 lead in the 5th minute. The Lions took a 2-0 lead in the 42nd minute, but the Rustlers cut the lead in half in the 43rd minute on a goal by fifth year winger Ashley Miller. In the second half, the Rustlers once again found themselves trailing by two, as the Lions extended their lead to 3-1 in the 64th minute. The Rustlers, however, would respond, as Miller found the back of the net for the second time of the day just a minute later. The Rustlers made a strong push to tie the game in the final minutes, applying lots of pressure late, but they were unable to capitalize on their scoring chances, ultimately dropping the match 3-2.
After scoring two goals in the game, Miller was named Player of the Game for the Rustlers.
On Sunday, the Rustlers traveled to Red Deer to take on the Queens. Like Saturday, the Rustlers fell behind early once again, as the Queens opened the scoring in the 15th minute. Both teams would have scoring chances in the remainder of the first half, but neither was able to capitalize, and the Queens went into the half with the 1-0 lead. The lack of scoring continued early in the second half, with both teams having shots on goal, but the keepers making big saves for both of their teams. The Rustlers would be the first to score in the second half, with Miller finding the back of the net in the 66th minute, tying the game at 1. The Queens would extend their lead to 2-1 in the 78th minute. It looked like the Rustlers were going to drop the match, but a goal by second year midfielder Brielle Wall in the final seconds tied the match at 2.
Player of the Game for the Rustlers was first year goalkeeper Kiera Sunderland.
The Rustlers return home next weekend as they look to take the rematch against the Red Deer Queens (5-1-1). Kick-off is at 2 pm at VLA field.
