The second weekend of the ACAC Women's Soccer Regular Season saw the Lakeland Rustlers head to Southern Alberta to take on the SAIT Trojans and Olds College Broncos.
Saturday, the Rustlers were in Calgary to take on the Trojans. The Rustlers were able to keep the game tied at 0 for most of the first half until the Trojans were able to score in the 31st minute. After that, the Rustlers struggled to keep the ball out of their defensive end, as the Trojans managed 22 shots on goal compared to the Rustlers 5. The Rustlers were not able to capitalize on any of their shots, while the Trojans scored on 12 of 22 shots, on way to the 12-0 win. Player of the Game for the Rustlers was 3rd-year midfielder, #10 Gabrielle Lapointe.
The Rustlers traveled to Olds on Sunday to take on the Broncos. The Rustlers fell behind early, as the Broncos took a 1-0 lead in the 3rd minute. Just over ten minutes later, the Rustlers found themselves down 2-0 as the Broncos scored again.
The Rustlers had a chance to cut the lead in half on a shot by first year defender, #13 Emma Smith, in the 74th minute, but her shot went off the crossbar. The Broncos doubled their lead in the final minutes, as the Rustlers lost 4-0. Player of the Game for the Rustlers was centre, #8 Nikki Boutin.
"We started to show some improvement on Sunday," Rustlers Head Coach Kevin Wagner said. We are trying to teach a lot of basics, and we finally started putting things together."
The Rustlers return home next weekend as they look to use home field advantage to help them get their first win of the season. Saturday, the Rustlers face the Lethbridge Kodiaks (1-1-1), while Sunday, they face the Medicine Hat Rattlers (0-3-1). Kick-off is at 12 PM at VLA field.
