Rustlers open the season against the Lions

The Lakeland Rustlers Women's Soccer team dropped their season and home opener Sunday afternoon 2-1 to the Ambrose Lions.

Both teams struggled to get a good shot on goal early on in the game. Midway through the first half, Lakeland had a chance open the scoring, but the shot by Rustlers fifth year winger Ashley Miller was off the crossbar. Instead, Ambrose would open the scoring in the 34th minute, with a goal by Bethany Herman. Neither team scored in the final ten minutes of the half, giving Ambrose the 1-0 heading into the second.

Both teams had scoring chances early on in the second half, but neither could capitalize. It wasn't until the 76th minute when the Rustlers were able to tie the score at 1 with a goal by Emma Lang. The Rustlers had several opportunities to extend the lead, but goalkeeper Janelle Perry made some big saves for Ambrose.  Ambrose would eventually take a 2-1 lead in the 87th minute on a goal by Kara Friesen. The Rustlers had a chance to tie the game in extra time, but the final second shot by third year midfielder Gabrielle Lapointe narrowly missed the net, giving Ambrose the 2-1 win.

Player of the Game for the Rustlers was #2 Emma Lang, who scored the lone goal for the Rustlers.  Miller had five shots on net but was unable to capitalize on them.

The Rustlers head to Southern Alberta next weekend to take on the SAIT Trojans (2-0) and Olds College Broncos (1-0-1).

The Rustlers return home September 22nd & 23rd to take on the Lethbridge Kodiaks and Medicine Hat Rattlers.  Kick-off is at 12 pm at VLA field.
