Rustlers Hockey Weekend Recap - October 14
Women's Hockey Plays Inaugural Hockey Game
After almost a 2-year wait the Lakeland Kings Energy Group Rustlers Women's hockey team competed in their first ACAC regular season hockey game. A couple of years ago a women's hockey program was just a conversation around a Tim Horton's table and now the team played their inaugural game in the Conference. Although the result on the scoreboard was not what the team would have liked the Russ Robertson arena was filled with energy and the Rustler student athletes played a high paced game against the 2021 – 22 ACAC women's hockey champion Red Deer Polytech Queens.
The first period saw a lot of back and forth action with the shots on goal being fairly even before the Queens put one puck behind the Rustlers tender Chantel Weller. The Queens added 2 more in the second to go into the third period with a 3–0 lead. At the start of the final period Rustler Kylie Perry made history scoring the first goal for the Rustlers in the ACAC. The team pushed hard in the third but could not add any additional goals, losing their first regular season game 3–1. Player of the Game for the Rustlers was Kylie Perry.
Although the Rustlers lost their home opener the team showed many positive signs of having a successful season in the very competitive ACAC league. Next up for the Rustlers will be their second home game against the Olds Broncos on Saturday October 22 at 7:00 pm.
