Rustlers Weekend Recap - February 2, 2026
Lakeland's Rustler squads filled the busiest weekend of the year with several victories.
Rustlers Basketball
Basketball had a road and home matchup against the Augustana Vikings. The women lost both, 80-40 and 79-34. Saide Spenrath had a season high 18 points on Friday, while Taylor Hebert and Declynn Wood had 10 and 11 points respectively on Saturday. Reese Fenrich also had 15 rebounds in the home contest.
Lakeland's men's team came into the weekend with the goal of earning home court advantage at the Conference Championship, but required a little help to do so, needing at least one loss from the NAIT Ooks against the Keyano Huskies. Following a Keyano win Friday, and the Rustlers winning 74-57, the stage was set on youth basketball night in Lloydminster to clinch the hosting rights and the men won 85-71. Taleh Wade had 44 points in two games, while Jordan Horobetz-Simpson added 39 points and 20 rebounds. This clinches the hosting rights for the ACAC Championship, which will take place in the Border City March 5-7, and keeps the Rustlers first in the North Division.
Rustlers Curling
Curling Mixed and women competed at the ACAC Championship in Lac La Biche this weekend. Women finished outside the podium, while the mixed team picked up three victories, winning bronze in an 8-3 match.
Rustlers Hockey
Women's hockey won both games in their homestand against the MHC Rattlers, by scores of 4-2 and 3-2. Schay Camphaug and Shelbi Thunderblanket were in net for the victories, while Keyra Buziak scored two power play goals on Friday to maintain her league leading status for goals and points. Several other players had multi-point weekends as well, including Calla Kampen, who notched Saturday's winner. Forward Addison Eurich sits second for goals and points and third in assists, while Amiyah Jones is now leading the league in assists. The sweep keeps the women's team eight points ahead of the RDP Queens for first in the standings.
Rustlers Volleyball
Volleyball also had a homestand against the NWP Wolves. Friday night was Foodbank night, with the teams raising hundreds of pounds in no-perishable food items for the Salvation Army. The women were able to sweet the Wolves 3-0, with Carly Hawryluk posting 11 kills. Saturday was senior day, with the women's team celebrating the accomplishments of the three 5th years, Emma Jeffs, Seanna Trumier and Avery Bates. In the third set, the visiting Wolves managed to put up a strong fight, taking the third set 25-23, but the Rustlers still took the match 3-1. This is the first set loss at home for Lakeland since February 2022. Hawryluk had 23 kills while Trumier had 22 digs for the weekend.
The Rustlers are now tied for the 4th and final playoff spot in the North Division, with four matches remaining.
On the men's side, they were battling with an NWP team who recently moved into second in the North Division. Lakeland won the first and third sets, but dropped the fifth set 10-15 to lose in five. Saturday, they responded with their best effort of the season, winning 3-0. Josh Bell and Aiden Maier got back into the starting lineup, contributing 8 and 9 kills respectively. They now sit two wins back of the Augustana Vikings for fourth.
What's Coming Up
This upcoming slate of ACAC action will see Lakeland's futsal teams in action at Portage College for the 2nd Regional competition, with both teams needing a good showing to secure their playoff berth. Basketball has a bye week, while hockey will host the RDP Queens Friday evening, before traveling to Red Deer the following night. A win guarantees that the women will have first place going into the playoffs. Puck drop on Friday is 5:00 pm.
Volleyball repeats basketball recent schedule, traveling to Camrose to face the Vikings, before returning to the Lloyd Campus gym on Saturday which is Rustlers Volleyball Club Night. The women look to secure playoff positioning, while the men need two wins to have a shot at catching Augustana. Match times Saturday are 6:00 pm and roughly 8:00 pm.
