Rustlers Weekend Recap - September 22, 2025
Lakeland College is truly into the swing of fall, with Athletics going through one of the busiest weekends of the year.
Rustlers Exhibition
Basketball and hockey were on the road for exhibition games, while the volleyball teams held their annual tournament. Both teams had a great showing playing mixed lineups against schools from across the prairies, with only a couple of losses over the three days and hundreds of fans in attendance.
Rustlers Soccer
Soccer was the lone regular season show again, an important home series against the NWP Wolves. All four teams in action came into the weekend hoping to get two wins, to get a leg up in the standings. Saturday was community soccer day, bringing out dozens of Merdian Soccer youth athletes.
The women had a tough outcome, out chanced by the Wolves throughout both games, losing 3-1 and 4-0. Lindsay Slusar and Cierra Nuttall were the POG's, with the awards being presented by Rustlers Alumni Gracey Smithson. This drops the women's team to 1-4.
On the men's side, the Rustlers struggled day one, losing 3-2, in spite of numerous scoring chances late. The guys recovered well on Sunday with a 2-0 victory, with Josh Malin scoring twice to win POG (Mitchell Joyce was the POG on Saturday). The men sit 2-3, just outside the playoffs.
What's Coming Up
This weekend will likely determine whether the soccer squads can make the postseason, starting with a home tilt on Saturday against Concordia. Following that, they travel to Edmonton to take on King's. Time remain 2:00 pm and 2:15 pm.
Additionally, the basketball teams host the RDP Queens and Kings Friday and Saturday at the Lloyd Campus Gym. Tip off Friday night is 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm.
