The Lakeland Rustlers Men's Soccer team played just one game over the Thanksgiving weekend, playing host to the Red Deer Kings Saturday afternoon.
The teams went back and forth in the opening minutes, playing a physical game and having chances to score. The Kings would be the first to score in the 22nd minute, giving them a 1-0 lead. The Kings would double their lead minutes later, while the Rustlers struggled to get shots on net. The Kings would add one more before the end of the first half, in the 38th minute, and the Rustlers found themselves trailing 3-0 at the half.
The physical play continued in the second half, with members of both teams being given cards. The Kings extended their lead with goals in the 51st and 69th minutes. The Rustlers had several good scoring opportunities and applied pressure, but were unable to find the back of the net. The Rustlers let the physicality of play get the better of them, as they played the last 30 minutes down a man after 1st-year midfielder Orre Peters was given a red card in the 60th minute. The two second-half goals by the Kings gave them the 5-0 win.
Player of the Game for the Rustlers was 2nd-year winger, #20, Yamaka Murray.
The Rustlers sit in 6th place in the ACAC South Division with a record of 0-5-3.
Next weekend, the Rustlers play their final home games of the regular season as they host the Olds College Broncos (2-5-1) on Saturday and SAIT Trojans (7-0) on Sunday. Kick-off both days is at 2 PM at VLA Field.
The Rustlers then hit the road October 20th & 21st to take on the Medicine Hat Rattlers and Lethbridge Kodiaks in their final games of the season.
